We are happy to announce the release of the ArcGIS Runtime SDK 1.0 for WPF.  A huge thanks to our users for great feedback given during Beta and Pre-Release stages that helped to shape this Final Release.

So, what is the ArcGIS Runtime SDK 1.0 for WPF?

The ArcGIS Runtime SDK 1.0 for WPF enables developers to build rich, highly functional GIS applications that take full advantage of the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) platform, yet the applications can be lightweight and have a small footprint.  Version 3.0 of the ArcGIS API for WPF has been renamed to the ArcGIS Runtime SDK 1.0 for WPF and includes new functionality to support local mapping, geocoding and geoprocessing via the runtime local server and a new accelerated display.

Here are few of the highlights:

What’s new since version 2.4 of the ArcGIS API for WPF release?

  • Support for new ArcGIS 10.1 for Server services and capabilities
    • Change layer rendering, layer order, or add layers on the fly in map services
    • Generate data classifications on the server for layers in map services
    • Use enhanced query options to order results and generate statistics
    • Track user identity for edits to a layer in a feature service
    • Generate printable output using the new PrintTask
    • Support for geometry with Z and M values
  • Support for new image service functionality
  • WebMap library replaced by new ArcGIS Portal library
  • Use IdentityManager to access token secured services and web maps
  • Better placement options for map tips and the InfoWindow control

Please refer to the comprehensive list Release notes: ArcGIS Runtime SDK 1.0 for WPF for complete details.

The ArcGIS Runtime Local Server enables you to use local packages containing GIS resources, such as maps, data, and geoprocessing tools in a disconnected scenario.  This gives you flexibility to use your applications online and offline. Your application can also have both online and local content and capabilities in the same map, this approach can make your application more efficient.

A new accelerated display improves display performance by using a high-performance DirectX map rendering engine. All tiled and dynamic layer types are supported, as well as feature layers, graphics layers symbolized with Esri symbols. The rendering engine also enables the use of advanced symbology to display military graphics and symbols. Performance benefits are particularly apparent with large numbers of graphics that are frequently updated.

Applications built with ArcGIS Runtime SDK for WPF are self-contained with no impact on other ArcGIS technology installed on the machine enabling users to run different technologies side by side. The SDK provides a deployment tool which simplifies deployment by enabling you to deploy only what you need based on functionality that you require and your target platform without having to install anything.

The SDK provides an interactive sample application accessible from the start-menu.  The sample application gives you an overview of what you can achieve using the

ArcGIS Runtime SDK 1.0 for WPF.  Each sample consists of Live Sample, XAML and CSharp and VBNET code behind tabs.   A search capability is provided to allow you to search efficiently for a specific sample or functionality of interest. We think you’ll find many ways to integrate the code samples into existing and new applications.  Simply copy and paste the sample code provided to take advantage of the functionality. Going forward, you can expect new samples in the sample application to reflect any new functionality available at SDK releases.

As a developer, you can access the ArcGIS Runtime SDK 1.0 for WPF through your EDN subscription. Enjoy, and we hope to see you at the User Conference in San Diego!
